A man accused of stealing his family friend’s gold band was yesterday admitted to bail in the sum of $50,000, after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Joseph Williams, a vendor and pork-knocker, is that on January 5, at Georgetown, he stole a gold band valued $52,000, property of Fayan Morris.
The resident of 192 South Ruimveldt Gardens denied the simple larceny charge when it was read to him by the magistrate.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey told the court that Williams is a family friend of Morris, who was at her home on the day the theft took place.
The court heard that the complainant left her home while the accused was still there and left her band at home as well. Upon her return, however, the prosecutor said that Morris discovered the item missing.
After making enquires, Harvey said that the accused admitted to Morris that he had stolen the item and subsequently took her to where he had sold it. He was subsequently arrested and charged.
His matter was transferred to Court Ten for report and fixture on January 17.
