Girl struck down at Soesdyke

A 15-year-old girl was struck down yesterday by a Ministry of Public Works vehicle at Church Hill, Soesdyke after she left school to go to a nearby shop.

Kiana Fredericks, of First Hill, Soesdyke, Linden Highway, was last evening admitted to the Female Medical Ward at the Georgetown Public Hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.

The girl’s mother, Michelle Henry, told Stabroek News that the child is a student at the Camille Dookie Institute.

She explained that her daughter left school with a friend around midday to get some school supplies. “The friend told me that they was going to the shop to get something for school,” she said.

She reiterated the friend’s recounting of the accident, stating that a red car was approaching as Kiana was crossing the road and the ministry vehicle overtook the car, hitting Fredericks in the process.

The driver responsible for the accident transported the injured child to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre from where she was subsequently transferred to the GPH.

When this newspaper visited the hospital last night, the girl was already admitted and said to be in a stable condition. Her mother was unable to specify what injuries she suffered but said she was doing okay.

She further stated that the driver of the vehicle has since contacted her and expressed regret at the misfortune. “He said sorry… he tried, he pulled brakes but I don’t know,” the woman said. She confirmed that he is assisting with investigations at the Soesdyke Police Outpost.
