Dear Editor,
As you may be aware, several letters have been written to the media regarding the state of affairs for employees at the Bureau of Statistics (BOS). The sole purpose of those letters was to remind the powers that be and the public at large that employees at the BOS were being neglected in relation to their pension/gratuity, superannuation, salary, promotional advancement and other entitlements in spite of numerous promises from the Chief Statistician and the Minister of Finance. To date these matters have still not been addressed.
It should be noted that recently some employees who reached the retirement age of 60 years over two years or more ago, have been sent home without anything to show for their years of service, and are yet to receive any favourable word from management. This development has left some young staff members uncertain about their future with the organization.
I would therefore wish that this issue be brought to the attention of the President of Guyana and hope that he uses his authority to have it addressed soonest, since the Head of the Presidential Secretariat and the Minister of Finance, who are both aware of the situation and have to pronounce on same, seem not to appreciate the seriousness of the matter.
Finally Editor, I would just like to remind the Chief Statistician, the Minister of Finance and other stakeholders that the Population and Housing Census is to be held in 2012.
Yours faithfully,
(Name and address provided)
