Clive Lloyd says that the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) is “messing with the wrong person” after that organisation, through its General Secretary Anand Sanasie, wrote Sport Minister Dr. Frank Anthony requesting that Lloyd’s appointment as head of the government-imposed Interim Management Committee be rescinded.
Lloyd yesterday said that the persons responsible for the letter are “attempting to destroy his character” but “sorry that cannot be done”. He said that one day he will “confront” them but at present the aim is to ensure that things are fixed with Guyana’s cricket.
Lloyd, the only West Indies skipper to win World Cups for the Caribbean side, said that he has served cricket well and the sport has given him “upward mobility”. Therefore, he was disappointed by the attempt of the GCB to have his appointment as head of the IMC rescinded.
According to Lloyd, at this stage of his life he is giving back to the sport and to his country.
In the letter to the ministry, Sanasie claimed that Lloyd’s appointment to the IMC “has been meeting with and creating unnecessary discord amongst our players and staff of the GCB.”
Sanasie continued, “In fact, he has been operating as if the GCB does not exist and his committee has replaced same. This situation is totally unacceptable and has been creating an atmosphere of tension and uneasiness. We note his derogatory comments, in various sections of the media, against the WICB and GCB. We are cognizant of the ICC and WICB stance on political interference in cricket and urge that immediate steps be taken to ensure that Mr. Lloyd’s appointment as a WICB non-member director is immediately rescinded for bringing the WICB and the sport in general, into disrepute.”
