Norton Street, Lodge residents say that emergency repair works to their street, carried out by the Public Works Ministry on Tuesday, were not done properly, and they are threatening to resume protesting until the authorities act.
The protest, sparked by the death of Norton Street resident Orin Sobers, who was hit by a minibus that had swerved to avoid a pothole, saw residents block the street and set fire to garbage to force repair works.
The Ministry subsequently dispatched workmen and machinery to the area to fill the potholes but when Stabroek News visited the area on Thursday, it was observed that parts of the potholes were filled but there were also exposed parts that road users had to navigate around.
Residents said that if the road is not properly repaired they will be burning tires on the street until their demands are met. They are also calling on the relevant authorities to come and inspect the works that was done on the road.
โWhen the bus them drive there next two morning, the road bruck up againโ said a female resident.
They also said that they do not want the South and Guyhoc Park buses to traverse the streets, since the drivers seem to think that they are on a race track. As alternatives, residents suggest that speed humps be put on the road or that a heavy police presence be dispatched there in the mornings.
