PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Ato Boldon dismissed suggestions that he has failed to get involved with upcoming athletes in Trinidad & Tobago.
The local daily T&T Newsday reported yesterday that Boldon, a former quadruple Olympic medallist for the two-island republic, said this was far from the truth.
“They have no idea that I am more involved now, behind the scenes, with (national) athletes than I ever have been,” said Boldon in an article appearing in the newspaper.
“Because I do have a broadcasting job [with American network NBC], it is something that has to be behind the scenes.”
He added: “I very much have my hands on a lot of people who are doing well and it does not need to be in the papers. That is why you don’t see it. All I need is to sit at home and say, ‘I’m glad to see that person coming along’.
“I have had my time in the spotlight. I did the most I could while I could. Now, what I want is to continue to further my sport.”
The 38-year-old former sprint star copped medals at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta in the United States (bronze in both the 100 and 200 metres), and the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia (silver in the 100m and bronze in the 200m).
