Bees posing problem for students at Central High

Africanised bees have been attacking students of the Central High School and school officials are concerned that all that has been done so far is spraying of the area.

Headmistress Kamlawattie Balroop said yesterday that after reports were made, a team was sent to the school by the Ministry of Agriculture in December, but did not locate the hive.

A few of the African bees which were caught and killed by the students yesterday.

“It appears as if there is a hive in the community and the bees lurk around. It was sprayed last weekend and the bees are not really in school, they are in the surrounding environment,” the headmistress said. She said that the team’s first visit was made in December during which nothing was found. “The first time the Ministry of Agriculture came, they didn’t find anything and felt only a few bees were flying around and that was it,” she explained.

Balroop stated that after being frustrated by the matter, she was forced to call again last week and a team was sent to spray the area. “They sprayed around the school and said they can’t look to go into the community and today again the bees are here.

About 10-15 children were stung on different occasions,” she further stated.

She added that the team has promised to revisit and she hopes the beehive would be found and removed.

Meanwhile, in the classroom which is mainly affected, Form 2D, several students complained about the numerous times they’ve been bitten. One child said she was stung a few days ago and her leg was left numb for some time.

The headmistress noted that the children have been warned to avoid contact but they continue to go after the bees when they notice them.
