A woman is alleging that she was shot in the left arm by a police rank who mistook her for a bandit as she was taking a bath on her verandah at Sparendaam Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara, on Tuesday evening.
However, the police in a press release only stated that Peters was shot during crossfire but did not say who shot at her.
According to Caroline Peters, 38, she was bathing on her verandah and the police were running behind a man, who apparently ran through her yard and as she was raising up she felt a burning on her left arm and saw it bleeding.
“I get up and feel me hand burning and then I see it shaking and bleeding,” the mother of five related.
She added that then the police instructed her to wrap her arm in her towel and they placed her in the jeep and brought her to the hospital and instructed the doctors to attend to her.
She was treated by the doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital and admitted to the female surgical ward, where she remains a patient.
One of the woman’s relatives said that they are yet to receive information from the police about what transpired, resulting in Peters being shot. The doctors at the institution also refused to speak to the relatives about Peter’s condition.
However, the police in a press release said that ranks had responded to a report of gunshots in the area and they saw two men, one of whom opened fire at them while being approached. The ranks returned fire, but the men escaped. Investigations are still ongoing, police added.
