Guyana’s national amateur flyweight champion and Road-To-London Olympic Games pugilist, Imran ’Magic’ Khan suffered a setback to his budding career after he sustained a stab wound to his left arm yesterday.
Stabroek Sport visited Khan at his Albouys Street, Albouystown home where he revealed what led to the stab wound that required six stitches at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Khan stated that he was picking up his younger brother from school and while on his way back home, he saw one of his old schoolmates on Sussex Street.
Khan said he greeted his former schoolmate and engaged in a conversation with her and while doing so the assailant ran up to him and started to inquire how Khan knew the young lady.
The 19-year-old Khan said a scuffle ensued and subsequently it was broken up, but as Khan and his younger brother continued on their journey home the assailant ran up to Khan and inflicted the stab wound.
Boxing fans will be disappointed to know that the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Boxer-of-the- Year 2011, who is scheduled to headline the amateur segment of the 20th edition of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control Pro Am card next Friday, will be unable to compete.
With the injury, Khan could also miss his Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) training camp stint from February 18 to March 10 in Cardiff, Wales.
Shazad Khan, the father of the ALBA Games bronze medalist, intimated that he will seek private advice in order for his son to heal as quickly as possible.
During a telephone interview with Stabroek Sport, president of GABA Steve Ninvalle stressed that GABA stands ready to do all they can to ensure that the Olympics prospect has a speedy recovery.
