What is all the ranting by the government about the Speaker of the House? The people have spoken and on Nov 28, 2011 they gave the PPP/C the presidency and the opposition APNU and the AFC the majority in Parliament.
The PPP/C is in the driver’s seat and has lost a great opportunity to fulfil the wishes of the people for naming a government of national unity. The PPP/C should have named Mr David Granger as Prime Minister, Mr Ramjattan as Minister of Legal Affairs, Mr Rupert Roopnaraine as Minister of Education and so on, and when they negotiated for the Speaker of the House Mr Ramkarran would have been accepted and returned as Speaker. However, the PPP/C has squandered this noble opportunity.
The PPP/C wants winner-take-all, and now wants to control the House and give the opposition nothing; 51% is not nothing. I think the PPP/C is doing it this way because they are gearing for a hung Parliament by not giving opposition bills when passed the presidential signature.
The opposition APNU and AFC have the right to meet separately from the PPP/C to plan their strategies.
