ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Merissa Aguilleira said West Indies Women will be looking to start the year the same way they finished last year, when they face India Women in three One-day and five Twenty20 Internationals between February 18 and March 4.
The West Indies Women’s captain was speaking after the West Indies Cricket Board announced that the regional selectors had kept faith with the same squad that qualified for next year’s Women’s World Cup.
West Indies Women topped the qualifying tournament that was contested late last year in Bangladesh and Aguilleira said she had high hopes for her team in the coming year.
“There are a lot of big things happening for us as a team [this year],” she said. “This is a year of great expectations for us and we will be looking to start well at home against India.
“We ended last year on a high when we played unbeaten and swept all before us in Bangladesh, so obviously we will be looking to start our 2012 campaign with a victory [in this series] as well.”
She added: “The last time we visited India it was a very competitive series and we expect the same this time around. We will have a camp before the series as we look to get ready for the matches.
“This series will also form part of our preparations for the ICC World T20 Championship and that is a tournament we believe we can win.”
West Indies Women will be one of eight teams contesting the Women’s World T20 which be played simultaneously with the men’s tournament this September in Sri Lanka. They have been drawn in Group B with New Zealand, South Africa and the hosts.
