A clothes vendor accused of stealing a man’s motorcycle was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Ray Wickham is that on January 21 at Georgetown, he stole one Honda motorcycle valued $475,000, property of Edward Barker.
The resident of 58 Lyme Street, Werk-en-Rust, denied the simple larceny charge when it was read to him.
Presenting the prosecution’s facts, Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey told the court that the accused removed the motorcycle by pushing it away from where it was parked outside a yard.
According to Harvey, as the defendant tried to escape with the motorcycle a mobile police patrol which was in the area was summoned and after the report was made, Wickham was arrested and charged.
The prosecution objected to the accused being granted bail after explaining to the court that he has pending matters before the court.
As a result, the prosecution contended that the accused poses a risk of flight and may likely commit similar offences.
Wickham’s attorney made an application for her client to be admitted to reasonable bail, stating that he has two children and is the sole breadwinner of his household.
The attorney, who acknowledged that her client has pending matters before the court, said that he has been attending court whenever required to do so.
When asked, she told the court that her client faces an attempted murder matter, a receiving stolen article charge and another simple larceny matter.
After listening to the requests of both prosecution and defence, the presiding magistrate informed the accused that he would be remanded to prison.
His matter was transferred to Court Two and will be called again on January 31.
