Attorney Vic Puran is the new state-appointed prosecutor in the preliminary inquiry into the treason charge against Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Major Bruce Munroe, his wife Carol Ann Munroe and ex-soldier Leonard Wharton are accused of treason.
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack was previously prosecuting the matter.
In a brief interview yesterday, however, Puran informed reporters at the court after the matter was heard that he has since been retained by the state to prosecute the matter.
When questioned about Ali-Hack’s absence and his filling the gap, Puran said that the “DPP is busy” and he has since been retained.
He further noted, “I would work for anyone who retains me.”
Meanwhile, when the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the matter was called yesterday, Colonel Sydney James took to the witness box once again, this time identifying voices on the tape which was played for the magistrate.
The case is being heard by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and will be called again on January 26 for the continuation of the PI.
The charge against the Munroes and Wharton states that between December 1, 2009 and December 16, 2010, at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, they intended to level war within Guyana to force the President out of his office, in order to compel the Government of Guyana to change its measures.
