New Thriving Restaurant on Main Street in support of the Tiger Bay Project run by the School of the Nations has made a monetary contribution of $1M.
The cheque for the amount was presented to Dr. Brian O’Toole of School of the Nations by Xiao Guang Zhao of New Thriving Restaurant at a simple handing over ceremony Friday at the school. A statement from the restaurant said that 130 children of the Tiger Bay community were also treated to lunch and presented with a gift for the New Year. “The company is committed to ensuring that the members of the community, especially the children, are given the necessary support and encouragement, in order that they can realise their full potential,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the wider community in the underprivileged area is now becoming significantly involved in the programme, and recently too Stanley Ming, Director of Mings Products and Services, donated $1M to the project.
For the past two years more than 100 persons from the Tiger Bay community have been participating in a variety of activities at the school in the afternoons, including literacy classes, a mentoring programme, parent education classes, learning to play steel pan, computer classes and sports programmes, the School of the Nations said in a press release.
More than 50 members of the school’s 6th Form, as part of their service project, act as mentors on the Tiger Bay project.
