For the past 55 years the Hindu community of Success on the East Coast Demerara, situated five miles east of the capital city of Georgetown had been faithfully burning their religious ritual Holika annually along a sideline dam west of their village peacefully according to their religious custom, but unfortunately this year they cannot, because the said reserved land was taken over by squatters.
Squatters claim that they have legally squatted on the land because it was given to them by the erstwhile Chairman of the NDC of LBI/ Better Hope.
Several prominent Hindu brothers and sisters who are very concerned had made attempts to meet the national head of the Hindu community of Guyana to discuss this matter, but were always informed that he is very busy or at a meeting with one senior official or another.
And while we are at it, Editor, the streets and drainage in this community are in a deplorable state. Animals, ie cows and pigs are nonchalantly enjoying what they are good at, arousing the ire of the aggrieved taxpayers, and also older citizens. Several persons had expressed the view that because the PPP had election meetings in the village twice during the last election that were ill attended by the residents, the incumbent administration is giving them the Nelson‘s eye with a cold shoulder.
