Yesterday’s rainfall: The Hydrometeorological Service as at 8.00 hours on January 30th, 2012, received reports from a number of its rainfall stationsa cross the country. These reports give a total accumulated rainfall between 8.00 hours January 29th to 8.00 hours January 30th, 2012. Data collected so far indicated that many stations along the coast and near inland locations exceeded 100mm in 24 hours. The highest recorded rainfall was 169.2 mm which was reported at Wakenaam in Region 3. Other values exceeding 100mm was reported at Anna Regina (104.5 mm), Arpiarco (122.3mm) and at Wakapoa (130.3mm).
The weather outlook: During the next 24 hours current conditions will be sustained with light to moderate intermittent rainfall. Ocassional heavy downpours are likely during the period as well. Rainfall quantities are likely to exceed 75mm in the next 24 hours ending 8.00 am January 31st.
The D&I Update will be updated twice per day at 9.00 in the morning and at 4.00 in the afternoon for the next week. Guyana has experienced heavier than normal amount of rainfall over the last 48 hours. The heavy rains have caused the drainage system to be challenged and in some cases floods have resulted.

- Flood conditions have been reported in Regions Four, Five and Six in areas on the East Coast Demerara (Lusignan, Montrose, Triumph, Paradise, Dazzel Housing Scheme, Hope/Dochfour, Clonbrook and Beehive), On the East Bank Demerara (Diamond), Region 5 (Blairmont and Waterloo, Ithaca, Rosignol, Bath, Golden Fleece, Nos. 27/28, D’Edward, Cotton tree and Hope/Experiment Housing areas), Region 6 (Palmyra to Borlam, Canje, Letter Kenny, Wellington Park, some low lying farming areas in Black Bush Polder and Whim),
- However, water levels are receding in some areas in Regions Five and Six
- Flooding in mostly farmlands in Oku, Canal No.1 and De Buff, Canal No.2. High waters have been experienced in areas such as Ruimzegt, La Grange, Goed Fortuin, Pouderoyen, Region Three.
- Increase water level has been recorded in Mahaica and Mahaicony Creeks. Water is rising in Macooba and other areas in Mahaicony Creek.
- All pumps and sluices are operable.
- The water level in the drainage system along the coast of Regions 2 to 6 is high.

East Demerara Water Conservancy
The Water Conservancy Level is manageable. We will continue to monitor the level of the East Demerara and other water conservancies in Guyana.
