Dear Editor,
I must commend Stabroek News‘ reporter Treiston Joseph on his story captioned ‘Synthetic track stuck at phase one after 13 months‘ (January 27).
It would be of interest if someone from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport or the contractor could go on record and explain to the public if this project is indeed at a standstill. Also whether the Ministry of Sport and the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) are currently in talks as to the venue of the 2012 National School Championships. Earlier, it was said by the GTU that the NSC 2012 might very well be heading to Region 2 if the synthetic track is completed in time.
SN on Jan 26, reported that hinterland athletes were seeking overseas sponsorship and opportunities. I fully understand the disadvantages the hinterland communities are faced with and I did write a letter earlier in the year challenging the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs to get involved. I also praised two female athletes from Region 9 who did extremely well at the Nationals.
Yours faithfully,
T Pemberton
