Rain yesterday forced the postponement of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) first event of the year, its annual Cross Country race.
The event, which was to be held at the National Park, had to be postponed owing to flooding of the course by the heavy rainfall.
The run was the first event scheduled for the AAG’s 2012 calendar and would have seen an infusion of middle, longdistances runners along with sprinters from various clubs competing at the event.
President of the AAG, Colin Boyce, yesterday indicated that the AAG will be looking to forward the meet to this Sunday once the weather permits.
“Yeah, well, the outer edges of the course were flooded and you have to look at the safety of the athletes,” Boyce told Stabroek Sport.
“We have to sit and deliberate what to do next but we are looking at next Sunday to host the cross country once the weather holds up,” Boyce declared. In addition, the weather will also cause the AAG to push back the staging of its first Developmental Meet due to the cross country being postponed.
“We were to have our first Developmental Meet next week at Enmore ground but because we might have to push the Cross Country to next Sunday, we will have to push the Developmental Meet to the following Sunday.
“… Martin (John Martin, coach of the Enmore track club) indicated that the ground was already waterlogged so we might indeed hold the Cross Country next Sunday,” the former national sprinter told Stabroek Sport.
