Residents and users of the Timerhi main road that leads to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport are concerned about their safety because of the rapid erosion at the sides of the road.
According to one resident, Patrick (only name given) the sides of the road are being eroded because of a drain that was dug to facilitate the highway expansion project. He added that if the situation is not looked into there will be a disaster.
Heavy-duty vehicles traverse the road on a daily basis and there will come a day when the soil below the road wears away, resulting in it ollapsing, he said.
“There is a disaster impending there, the road is becoming more and more eroded everyday,” he said.
When Stabroek News visited the area it was obvious that approximately two feet underneath the road had been eroded by approximately 24 feet. Water could be seen running downhill into the drain thus making the erosion more rapid.
The residents are calling on the relevant authorities to have the road fixed urgently.
