National Chess champion Taffin Khan is among the leaders after the first round of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Trophy Stall sponsored eight round tournament. Khan, the highest rated player in the competition got the better of former national junior chess champion Cecil Cox in their opening clash.
Cox, according to reports made a number of blunders and was forced to resign.
Current national junior champion Haifeng Su and Frankie Farley were also among the winners on Sunday in matches played at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street.
President of the GCF Shiv Nandalall said that the owing to the inclement weather, the association was only able to play one of the two scheduled rounds because of a late start.
The final six rounds he said will continue this weekend starting on Saturday.
The annual tournament has attracted 20 competitors.
