Bandits on Tuesday escaped with gold and diamond jewellery along with home appliances and cash valued $2 million during an early morning burglary at the home of a Craig resident.
Reports are that on January 31 at around 2 am bandits broke and entered the two-storey house of Terrence Kingston, a vegetable and fruit vendor of Lot 4 First Street, Craig, East Bank Demerara and stole jewellery worth in excess of $700,000, a laptop, a cellular phone, a music set and $360,000, totalling an estimated $2 million.
Kingston recounted that on the morning of the incident he left his wife who was sleeping at their three-bedroom home and went to the market with his vehicle to purchase vegetables which he usually sells at their residence.
The man added that upon returning home, he was informed by his wife that the house had been broken into. A search was conducted of the house and the items mentioned were discovered missing, the distraught man said. The man also noted that the louvre panes from his windows which the bandits broke to enter the home were found in a large drum of water at the back of his house.
According to Kingston, his wife slept through the entire thing and only became aware when she woke up and discovered the house ransacked.
The man explained that the bedrooms in his house are soundproof and that’s why his wife did not hear any noise.
The wife said the police went to their home to take fingerprints and they are investigating. However, Kingston noted that no one has been held so far.
Meanwhile, residents expressed concern over the prevalence of crime in the Craig area. One resident said that within the past two weeks, several villagers’ homes have been broken into, while a few have been robbed. “It is very rampant here but police ain’t getting a clue who these people are,” a worried resident said.
Two days ago 54-year-old Sita Reddy was found at her Lot 139 Second Street, Craig residence with her throat slit after a suspected robbery.
