A 42-year-old man who allegedly snatched a gold chain from a woman while she was in a minibus was on Wednesday remanded to prison after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The court was told that on January 28 at Georgetown the accused Gavin Hinkson allegedly stole one gold chain valued $38,000 from Laurna Patterson. The man pleaded not guilty to the charge of larceny from the person when it was read to him.
In narrating the police facts to the court, Prosecutor Jairam Luckhai told the court that on the day the VC was in a Route 31 minibus when she was approached by the accused who pushed his hands through the minibus window and snatched the gold chain that she was wearing. The prosecutor said that police ranks who were in the area chased after the accused and he was apprehended. A search was conducted on his person and the article was discovered in his right side pants pocket, the prosecutor concluded.
When given a chance to speak, the accused begged for leniency and in his defence he said, “I jump out a bus and de police man pull me up… and tell me I snatch somebody chain but de VC tell de police that it is not me who snatch she chain and let them loose me but de hold me back.”
The magistrate remanded the accused to jail and noted that he did not present to the court a fixed place of abode when he was asked.
The matter was transferred to Court One for report and fixture on February 10.
