Murdered Craig woman’s husband held

The husband of Sita Reddy, the woman who was found dead with her throat slashed in her home at Craig Village, East Bank Demerara on Wednesday, has been arrested after police investigators found inconsistencies in a statement he had given.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud told Stabroek News that the man was taken into custody hours after the bloodied body of Sita Reddy was found. It was he who made the gruesome discovery and informed relatives.

Persaud explained that the man is being treated as a suspect, while adding that ranks returned to the scene to conduct further investigations. He explained that there were reports of domestic violence.

The man’s son-in-law Brian Hiraman confirmed the arrest and said that it came as a shock to him, since to the best of his knowledge the two had no problems. He explained that arguments between couples are a usual occurrence and that disagreements are their business. Hiraman added that the entire family is trying to support the man at this time.

He said that the police are not telling him much but all he knows is that his father-in-law is being questioned.

Reddy, 54, of Lot 139 Second Street, was found in the lower flat of her ransacked two-storey house around 2:10 pm. Her throat was slashed and there were stab wounds about her body. A post-mortem examination on the woman’s body is to be conducted today.

Hiraman had told reporters that his mother-in-law started a chicken business about three months ago and that persons would come to the house to make purchases. A young man had recalled seeing three men entering the yard to make a purchase. It was sometime later that screams rang out.

Shortly before the discovery, Reddy’s husband called her inquiring about his vehicle’s documents, which he was unable to find when the police stopped him.

He later found them under the car seat and repeated calls to his wife to tell her this went unanswered.

It was then that he decided to go home.

Over $1.5 million in cash and jewellery including her wedding ring and foot band were reported missing.
