(Trinidad Guardian) A couple, both foreign nationals, are expected to appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate on Monday after a yacht they were residing in was found to contain a substantial cache of illegal arms and ammunition. The illegal weapons were found during a joint exercise by officers of the Marine Interdiction Unit and Customs and Excise Division on Thursday morning. Police said the officers, acting on a tip-off, went to the yacht which was anchored off the coast in Scotland Bay, Chaguaramas. A search of the vessel revealed a Remmington .44 pistol, 75 rounds of assorted ammunition and three canisters containing gun powder which weighed a total of 940 grammes.
A miniature cannon with 200 lead cannon balls was also found to be outfitted to the vessel. Police said that a 58-year-old South African national and his 33-year-old Brazilian wife were arrested in connection with the bust.
They were later charged by officers with importing prohibited items into T&T and several counts of possession of arms and ammunition. Police said the vessel was registered in the United Kingdom and bore a British flag.
