The Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFCSA) has donated over half a million dollars to journalist and international cricket commentator Sean Devers to assist him to undergo an operation.
Devers, who was recently diagnosed with Glioma, (a tumor found in either the brain or the spine) will have to undergo an operation abroad to have the tumor removed.
On Friday, at the Georgetown Cricket Club, Devers received from the GFSCA, the sum of $520,000 to assist him in paying for the operation.
The presentation was made by Lalta Gainda, executive member of the GFSCA.
“We the members of the GFSCA believe that serious problems require speedy and decisive action. Not all talks. Hence our management opted to take the lead position in trying to assist Mr. Devers,” said Gainda.
Gainda described Devers as “a very prominent and leading contributor to Guyana’s, Regional and West Indies Cricket,” and said the news of the former national youth cricketer’s illness came as a shock.
“This news came to us as a shock, especially since he recently participated in the commentary of our last finals in December, 2011, the Bakewell Cup and seemed quite fine to us,” said Gainda.
“On the behalf of the GFSCA and our associate websites www.guyana-cricket.com and www.Caribbean-cricket.com, which are hosted and managed by Peter Gonsalves, we wish to advise that we have managed to raise the sum of US$ 2600 or G$520,000 equivalent, which we will now present to Devers. Of this sum, US$1000 was contributed to him by the above mentioned web sites. (www.guyana-cricket.com and www.caribbean-cricket.com),” he added.
Gainda also urged other individuals and organizations to hasten their support as
“time is of great importance.
“Mr. Devers, we can assure you that we, the members and supporters of the GFSCA do believe that you will recover from your current illess. Continue to be a fighter. Guyana’s cricket (hard ball & soft ball) needs you, as well as your family. May God bless you,” Gainda ended.
