ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Twenty-two wickets tumbled as the first round contest of the Regional Four-Day Championship between Guyana and Leewards Islands swung this way and that, on the second day at Windsor Park here yesterday.
Guyana, resuming the day at 162 for four, lost their last six wickets for 46 runs to be all out for 208 before lunch, with pacer Gavin Tonge grabbing five for 53 and West Indies leg-spinner Anthony Martin (2-44) and off-spinner Justin Athanaze (2-58) finishing with two wickets each.
The Leewards then capitulated for a meagre 98, undermined by another West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo who took four for 39 and left-arm spinner and captain Veerasammy Permaul grabbing three for 19.
Only rookie Windies batsman Kieran Powell, who struck 37, showed any will to fight.
With a lead of 110, Guyana then struggled in their second turn at the crease and finished the day 86 for six.
Chris Barnwell top scored with 24 but medium pacer Nelson Bolan snatched three for 24 to keep the Leewards in the contest.
Starting the day hoping for a big total, Guyana suffered an early setback when Barnwell added just two to his overnight 20 before falling to Athanaze at 164 for five.
With just two runs added, his overnight partner Assad Fudadin fell to a catch at cover off Tonge as Guyana slipped further without finding any recovery.
In reply, the Leewards were quickly in trouble eight for two with Shane Jeffers (2) and Orlando Peters (1) both out, before limping to lunch at 19 for three.
Afterward, Powell made a fist of it, taking boundaries off pacer Brandon Bess and a big six Bishoo.
However, when the 21-year-old left-handed edged Bishoo to Sewnarine Chattergoon at slip, the Leewards innings tailed away.
