An 18-year-old man who damaged his grandmother’s utensils and threatened to burn her house down because she warned him about the type of music he was playing was yesterday sentenced to serve time in jail after he pleaded guilty when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The court heard that on February 4 at 3726 North Ruimveldt the accused, Dellon Joseph, unlawfully and maliciously damaged a quantity of utensils and two cordless phones among other items valued a total of $163,000. The items were the property of Sheila Joseph.
It is also alleged that on the same day the accused used threatening language to the VC.
The teenager who wept remorsefully pleaded guilty to both offences.
In presenting the police facts to the court, Prosecutor Nivelle Jeffers said that on the day at about 09:00 hours, the VC had a conversation with the accused about the music that he was playing. The defendant, Jeffers said, subsequently became annoyed and abusive to the VC. The prosecutor added that the accused also threatened to burn down the woman’s house and to kill her. The court was told that several items were destroyed by the angry Joseph.
The woman immediately reported the matter to the police station and the man was later arrested.
When given a chance to speak the VC pleaded with the court to have the young man removed from her home, adding that she is living in great fear.
Judy Rodney who was present during the proceedings informed the court that she is the guardian of the accused and she is willing to pay for the damage.
However, the VC objected and told the court that she will not accept any compensation. The woman added that her son who lives overseas will repurchase all of the items which were damaged by the accused and if she accepts the compensation she will be going against what her son wants. “My son tell me mummy I going to buy back all de things he damage… but he must go down,” the woman noted.
After listening to the VC, Magistrate Sueanna Lovell informed the accused that his actions have consequences. The accused was sentenced to three months in jail on the damage to property charge and six months behind bars for the other offence.
The sentences will run consecutively.
