Residents of Lusignan East ‘Double Road’ are blaming Courtney Benn Contracting Services Limited (CBCSL) for the rapid deterioration of their road, due to the amount of heavy-duty vehicles traversing the area on a daily basis.
According to the residents, CBCSL initially used the Lusignan Centre Ground for parking. However, they added that since October of last year, the workers moved to the East Playfield, where they now park all their heavy-duty vehicles. As a result, the residents cannot utilize the playfield for recreational purposes.
Salima Mohammed said that since the equipment arrived, the road in the area has been deteriorating rapidly and theauthorities are doing nothing to stop it. She added that she does not know who gave the company permission to park on the playfield since youths from the area play cricket there on a regular basis.
“Them ain’t doing nothing good deh… them a build road all ova and a destroy awe one and leff awe fuh suffer,” she said.
CBCSL is contracted by the Ministry of Housing and Water to build roads on the East Coast under the Carib-bean Development Bank-funded Community Road Improvement Programme (CRIP) and according to Consultant Engineer Deon Amsterdam the ‘Double Road’ is slated for improvement as soon as the weather conditions improve. Another CBCSL official, Mr Gocool, (only name given), who is the engineer responsible for the site, said that permission for the area to be used was granted by the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC).
Efforts to contact the Chairman of the NDC for comment proved futile.
