The Guyana Sports Development Foundation (GSDF) yesterday handed over a cheque valued at $200,000 to the University of Guyana to assist the university’s relay team to travel to Barbados for the annual relay fair.
Accepting the cheque on behalf of the University of Guyana was Daniella King, Assistant Registrar Student Welfare, who said that the university welcomed the donation as it was timely. King said that she hopes the relationship that has been forged would continue long into the future. In handing over the cheque GSDF, Colin Baker, said that while it is known that the GSDF’s foundation was football, the organization was making a concerted effort to branch off into other areas.
“Also as a person who did track in my younger days and a former student of the University of Guyana where I graduated, it gives me great pleasure to be a part of such a cause,” said Baker. Also present at the ceremony was the University’s Sports Coordinator Lavern Fraser-Thomas.
Meanwhile, at a later meeting with officials of the university, the team was congratulated by both the Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr. Theodosius Velloza and King.
Dr. Velloza in his address congratulated the students and also said that being selected at any level was an honour.
He said he hoped that the students will conduct themselves properly as they are going to represent the name of the university, themselves and their country.
King said that the University of Guyana was not the only contingent travelling to Barbados and as such should there be any misconduct the name of the University of Guyana should not come into disrepute. She also advised the students to show good sportsmanship whether they win or lose.
The University of Guyana team left today for Barbados with a team of 15 athletes
and two officials. The athletes are; Karl Vanier, Lawanda Whaul, Dane Johnson, Alexis Williams, Adacie Fanfair, Ian Campbell, Elton Bollers, Carlene Waithe, Diquan Murray, Treiston Joseph, Juanita Hooper, Feona Jones, Owen Adonis and Neil Barry jr.
