Two corpses found at separate locations along the Essequibo coast have been identified as two from the five-man rescue party that went to the aid of a group of fishermen robbed by pirates on the Essequibo Coast.
The boat with the quintet broke up off Suddie in heavy seas before it could reach the fishermen. Only one from the rescue mission survived.
Yesterday, Wendy Derothe, sister of Richard Smith told Stabroek News she travelled to the Morgue of the Suddie Hospital after receiving a call from police that a body suspected to be that of her brother had washed up at the Devonshire Castle foreshore. “We get de call and two of my brother friends go with me and identify he. Our parents died so is just us. I am so sad I was hoping he was alive but this is the worst” she said.
Kumar Narine was also identified by relatives, police said in a release. His relatives had initially suspected that it was his body which was first found on Tuesday at Hampton Beach, Essequibo after they were told about distinguishing marks.
The two men were part of a rescue mission that left the Meadow Bank dock on Saturday, bound for an area off Charity, to give aid to about 19 men who were attacked by pirates and stripped of their valuables and outboard engines.
