The stage of the National Cultural Centre (NCC) came alive with exuberant dance moves and colourful costumes when the Ministry of Education’s Children’s Mash Competition continued on Tuesday.
Dancers jumped, gyrated, pranced and flounced across the stage, giving performances that aptly incorporated this year’s theme “Mashing with pride, keeping we traditions alive”, a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said. Tuesday’s contest saw participation from schools within the Georgetown district even as similar competitions are ongoing across the country. The winning performers from each district will then compete for the top spots in the country.
The pieces were received by loud screams and cheering by an audience comprising students from the participating schools. The audience was also kept entertained by moderator Travis Chase who, at intervals, gave lively renditions of “Palance.”
At the nursery level, pupils competed in several categories of dance: religious beliefs, ring dance/games children’s play and fantasy. At the primary level the categories included religious beliefs, interpretative, fantasy, ring dance/games children’s play, legends and traditions, social commentary and masquerade.
At the nursery level, in the Religious beliefs group: Green Acres won first, followed by South Road Nursery in second place and Lodge Nursery in third. In the Ring dance/games children’s play category, South Road won first, Graystock Nursery was awarded the second and third positions. In the Fantasy category, Head Start Nursery came first, and the Alexander Village and Lodge nursery schools came in second and third, respectively.
At the primary level, in the 5-7 years age group Sophia came first, followed by St Angela’s and St Agnes in third in the Religious beliefs category of dances. In the Ring dance/games children’s play, St. Pius Primary won first. North Georgetown secured the first position in the Fantasy category while Stella Maris copped second and St. Agnes primary third.
In the 8-10 age group, in the Interpretative category, St Agnes copped first place, Smith’s Memorial came second and North Georgetown primary, third. In Legends and traditions presentation, Smith’s Memorial won first, St Pius, second and Winfer Gardens came third. In the Religious beliefs category, Green Acres was adjudged first, Stella Maris copped second and St Pius, third. North Georgetown Primary was the only school which gave a presentation in the Social commentary and masquerade category, GINA said.
