Head Coach of Guyana’s Golden Jaguars football squad Trinidadian Jamaal Shabazz has offered to assist the Scotiabank/Pepsi Schools Football Academy by making available two coaches from the Twin Island republic to work with their Guyanese counterparts ahead of the tournament phase of the academy.
This disclosure was made by Colin Baker, Chairman of the organizing committee of the academy during the opening ceremony last Tuesday at the Ministry of Education Sports Complex on Carifesta Avenue.
Baker said Shabazz who was earmarked to speak at the function but was delayed in Trinidad offered to assist in getting the coaches here to work along with local coaches and Physical Education teachers of the 12 schools competing in the Academy.
Baker disclosed that Shabazz will also interact with the students from the Academy during his stint in Guyana.
Tucville Secondary and North Georgetown Secondary are the reigning champions in the boys and girls division respectively following their success in last year’s finals at Georgetown Cricket Club ground.
Thirteen local coaches are already certified for this year’s programme following a three-day Course conducted by United States-based Coaches Instructor Stanley Harmon last week.
The tournament phase of the Academy is slated to kick off on March 3 with both male and female students from 12 schools vying for supremacy.
Shabazz who was instrumental in Guyana’s Golden Jaguars advancing to the third round of the 2014 World Cup preliminary competition was due in Guyana yesterday to step up training ahead of several warm up matches earmarked for the National squad in preparation for their round fixtures.
