Guyana lose Chattergoon but rain ruins day

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Only eight overs were possible as rain ravaged the opening day of the second round Regional Four-Day Championship match between Guyana and Windward Islands at Windsor Park here yesterday.

When play finally began at 4:30 pm, Guyana, surprisingly opting to bat first after winning the toss, lost Sewnarine Chattergoon to the second ball of the innings, bowled by pacer Nelon Pascal without scoring.

Opener Rajendra  Chandrika, unbeaten on 11, and Leon Johnson, nine, ensured there were no more hiccups for the Guyanese, steering the side to the safety of the close at 24 for one.

Persistent morning rain ruined any play before tea, as rain swept across the country, preventing officials from removing the covers on the playing area.

When the rain cleared, match officials scheduled 24 overs to be bowled in the truncated day’s play but bad light put paid to this.

Guyana and the Windwards suffered contrasting fortunes in their opening round fixtures, with the Guyanese crushing Leeward Islands by 234 runs and the Windwards losing to Jamaica by 81 runs.
