Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry remanded an 84-year-old man accused of trafficking when he yesterday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge.
The court heard that on February 9, at Lot 12 Grove Public Road, Simeon Bumbury allegedly had 72 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. He pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him.
In presenting the facts to the court, Prosecutor Lionel Harvey said that on the day in question, a group of lawmen from the narcotics branch conducted a raid during which a search was conducted at the defendant’s home. Harvey said that ranks combed the house and found the narcotics next to the television. Bumbury was detained and the cannabis weighed in his presence.
The prosecutor strongly objected to bail on the grounds that no special circumstances were presented to the court. He then pointed out that special circumstances do not apply to the offender but to the offence. Further, the man has other matters pending before the court.
Bumbury was ordered to appear in the Providence Magistrates’ Court today.
