Magistrate Sueanna Lovell sentenced a man to two years jail for having possession of a pistol without licence and 14 months jail for having live ammunition without licence, after he pleaded guilty to the charges at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Thirty-two-year-old Terrence John, a father of three, was accused of shooting at a police corporal and having one .32 Walters pistol and six live matching rounds of ammunition in his possession without licence on December 23. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment on the firearm charge and 14 months jail for unlawful possession of ammunitions.
However, John maintains that he is not guilty of discharging a loaded firearm at Police Corporal Kester Cusbert, with intent to maim, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm.
When the matter was first called and John appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry he strongly denied the charges and had alleged that the police had shot at him but he never shot at them.
While serving time in jail the accused will continue to appear in court for continuance of the other charge to which he pleaded not guilty.
