Controversial president of Alpha United Football Club, Odinga Lumumba, yesterday withdrew his club from participating in activities organized by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA).
“The Executive of Alpha United Football Club has decided to withdraw from participating in any activity organized by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) until a settlement is made between the GFA and the Guyana Football federation (GFF), “ the letter to the GFA General Secretary Christopher Matthias stated yesterday.
In the letter, signed by Lumumba, it claims that “the executive of Alpha United was forced to make the decision following the unwillingness and evident sloth of your executive to carry out the mandate of its General Council which directed that GFA’s Lawyer Roysdale Forde meet with the GFF’s Lawyer.
“Alpha United finds this modus operand disrespectful, untenable and not in the best interest of football, in particular with Guyana’s role in the qualification for 2014 World Cup. Therefore, as of February 15, 2012, our withdrawal becomes effective.
This latest about turn is in stark contrast to last December when Alpha United, through Lumumba, was one of the architects of the decision by the GFA to stage a Banks Beer knockout completion.
Lumumba remembered.
“Please note that Alpha United has remained committed to the upliftment of football in Georgetown as was demonstrated in December 2011 when we displayed loyalty by playing in the Banks Beer Knockout Competition,” he wrote.
