Mechanic Marlon ‘Junior’ Welcome died yesterday after being attacked by a man who broke into his Sophia home.
Welcome, 33, of 195 A Field Sophia, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Woodlands Hospital, where he was taken for treatment after he was reportedly hit on the head by his assailant.
Police said initial investigations indicated that Welcome, who was left watching television, was later found by his reputed wife with injuries to his head. The door to the house was reportedly found open and several panes missing from a louver window, police added.
The attack occurred around 1:50am, according to police and Welcome’s niece, Tiffany Welcome, told Stabroek News that he was awakened by a noise. She said he was subsequently confronted by man armed with a piece of wood and was struck to the head.
She added that her sister, Enikeni Isaacs, lived with her uncle and has said that she was awakened by the noise of a scuffle in the living room. However, by the time Isaacs emerged to see what was happening, the attacker had already fled, leaving her uncle lying behind the sofa in front of his room door.
Neighbours were awakened by Isaacs’ screams and assisted her in transporting Welcome, who reportedly had a puncture wound to his left ear, to the Woodlands Hospital.
Welcome’s body was later taken to the Lykens Funeral Parlour, where his mother, Newburn Welcome identified him.
She said she noticed that he was bleeding from his nose and his head.
From all indications, his attacker gained entry through a window in the kitchen by removing the louver panes. The grieving Tiffany Welcome said that it was not the first time her uncle’s home has been broken into. “The other day them come in and tek all he things but he said lef them is material things… that is how he been good,” she cried.
While Isaacs was at the Turkeyen Police Station assisting investigators, other distraught relatives gathered at Welcome’s home all described him as a peacemaker and a generous person with an unblemished character.
Welcome was the father of two children, ages eight and one.
