The minnows have been eliminated and the stage is now set for fierce battles in the quarter-finals of the NAMILCO 16-team Football festival beginning tomorrow evening at the Tucville ground.
The four quarter-final matches will be played off tomorrow and Friday as the eight teams set their sights on the $1 million first prize.
The eight teams are Sunburst Camptown, Beacons, Santos, Guyana Defence Force, Alpha United, Riddim Squad. Georgetown Football Club (GFC) and Fruta Conquerors.
GFC and tournament host Fruta Conquerors are the latest teams to book their quarter-final places following first round victories on day four of the Festival Sunday evening.
Conquerors scored a commanding 3-1 victory over Charlestown United, while GFC squeezed past Flamingo 1-0.
Conquerors held a 1-0 lead at half time following a 15th minute strike by Anson Lynch.
The diminutive Marco Marcus then sent his winners further into the lead in the 50th minute. However, Charlestown United fought gamely and were rewarded for their efforts when Duereon Benjamin scored in the 60th minute.
However, Kwame La Fleur put the issue beyond doubt scoring the third goal for Conquerors five minutes later as they set up a showdown with the Bourda Boys, GFC.
GFC lacked fire power in their 1-0 win over Flamingo.
The game’s winner was scored in the 15th minute off the boot of Anson Lynch.
Tomorrow’s double header will see Beacons squaring off with Camptown at 19:00 hours while the second game will bring together Alpha United and Riddim Squad.
Friday’s two fixtures are Conquerors against GFC at 19:00 hours while GDF will come up against Santos at 21:00 hours.
The tournament now in its fifth year is sponsored by National Milling Company (NAMILCO) and organized by Fruta Conquerors Football Club.
