Police in E and F Division are investigating two murders that occurred on Monday, the suspects of which are still at large.
The first murder to occur was that of Brazilian Raimundo Gomes Da Silva, 41, at about 03:00 hrs at Black Water, Potaro.
Initial investigations, the police said in a press release, have revealed that Da Silva and another Brazilian man were imbibing at a shop in the area, when they both left and went outside.
Da Silva was subsequently seen with blood on his clothing and was “suspected to have been stabbed to his chest”. He was taken to the Mahdia Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to the police, the suspect reportedly fled the scene on an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV).
More than 12 hours later at 18:00 hrs a man known only as “Tall Man” was chopped to death at Konawaruk Backdam, during an argument. The police press release stated that investigations have revealed that “Tall Man” and another man were involved in an argument during which he was chopped to his neck and other parts of his body. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahdia Hospital, the release said, adding that the suspect has not yet been arrested.
Stabroek News was unable to contact any relatives of the men. Reports are that as police were transporting the remains of the Brazilian by road to the city, the ranks had to turn back after being informed of the second incident.
These two murders are the second and third for the year in the interior. On Monday, 20-year-old Esa Thomas was charged with the murder of Kumar Plummer which occurred at Arimu Backdam, Cuyuni. Reports are that between February 14 and 15, Thomas was guarding a mining camp when the accused reportedly went and requested gold. The deceased was later discovered dead with his feet and hands tied with polythene rope. There was also a piece of rope tied around his neck.
Murders in the interior have increased in recent times, as the price of gold also increased.
