A Campbellville man was yesterday remanded to prison after being arraigned on drug charges, including selling cannabis to a policeman.
Brian Small, 55, appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on charges that he had seven grammes of cannabis in his possession and that on the same day, he trafficked narcotics by selling four grammes of cannabis to an officer.
Small, of Lot 74 Campbellville Housing Scheme, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to him.
The court heard that he committed the offences on February 2, at Campbellville, Georgetown. The prosecution stated that during an operation, the accused sold four grammes of cannabis to a police officer for $1,000 and the money was subsequently recovered on his person.
When given a chance to speak, Small pleaded for leniency. He pointed out that his wife resides overseas and his 90-year-old father suffers from an ailment. The man added that he has two minor children depending on him for their survival and that remanding him to prison would leave them unattended.
After listening to the accused, the magistrate informed that he could only grant him what the law permits. As a result, the unrepresented Small was placed on $50,000 bail for the possession charge and was remanded to prison over the other charge.
The matter will be called again on March 13.
