Overseas-based Kelvin `Fathead’ Duesbury will headline the men’s singles of the National Sports Commission annual Mashramani tournament which climaxes today at the National Gymnasium.
Duesbury, based in the United States of America, arrived in Guyana last week and told Stabroek Sport that he will be competing in the Open men’s singles event.
Duesbury’s inclusion in the tournamentwill heighten interest in the men’s singles especially in the absence of most of the big name players in Idi Lewis, Godfrey Munroe and Christopher Franklin who are all expected to give the annual tournament a miss.
Their absence will pave the way for national champion Nigel Bryan to continue to stamp his dominance over the proceedings.
Bryan’s biggest threat will come from veteran Colin France, Duesbury, Edinho Lewis and Joel Alleyne.
Meanwhile the competition resumed on Friday with play in the doubles events and saw Stefan Corlette and Akecia Nedd defeating Elishaba Johnson and Nevaeh Clarkston in the junior mixed doubles final.
Corlette/Nedd won 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, and 11-4.
The pairs of Jeremy Singh/Salanas Jackman and Priscilla Greaves/Miguel Wong were joint third.
In the semi-finals Corlette/Nedd defeated Singh/Jackman 11-5, 12-10,9-11,11-3 and Johnson/Clarkston defeated Greaves/Wong 11-4,8-11,11-7,8-11,12-10.
The Junior Girl’s Doubles final will be contested this morning between Greaves/ Nedd and Jackman/ Clarkston.
In the semi finals Nedd/Greaves defeated Jolene Cozier/Tamera Ramgopaul at 11-3, 11-1, 11-4 and Jackman/Clarkston defeated Julia Hazelwood/Anika Reid at 3-11, 11-5, 11-4, and 11-4.
The junior boys’ doubles final was won by the pair of Elishaba Johnson/David Duncan who defeated the Sunil Logan/Samuel Fraser combination 11-3, 11-5, 11-5.
In the semi finals, the pair of Fraser/Logan defeated Lalbachan/Murray 11-7; 11-6.11-3 while Johnson/Duncan defeated Corlette/Wong 8-11, 11-6, 11-9 and 11-3.
