Emmie Shepherd called ‘Aunt Emmie’ of Lot 53 Stone Avenue, Campbellville, became Guyana’s latest centenarian when she turned 100 yesterday.
The mother of five was born on February 27, 1912 and is the fourth of six children for her parents. She and her younger sister, Vanie, who is 87 years are the sole survivors.
Aunt Emmie is the oldest member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Sheriff Street and her community and is also well respected as a woman of virtue and substance and always praises God.
Aunt Emmie has a passion for relating to life with the use of parables with her favourite being: ‘Bad company, the parrot said, as he shook his wounded head. If I wasn’t with the crow I wouldn’t have got shot by the farmer.’
She lives with her daughter and is still able to move about freely and enjoys savoring the delights that nature has to offer. Aunt Emmie loves to make wine with any fruits she gets.
On Saturday last her relatives got together and planned a big bash to celebrate her milestone and on Sunday the church also planned a service to celebrate her big day.
She has five children, 20 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and others who love her dearly and consider her their most prized possession.
