A two-month wait for the first horse race meet of the year resulted in a large and appreciative crowd turning out Sunday for the season opening meet at the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club, Alness, Corentyne Berbice.
And, The Message got through.
Colin Elcock’s The Message, romped to victory in the feature B class 1500M event sponsored by Banks DIH Limited claiming the $700,000 first prize and the Banks DIH trophy.
Who so Ever was second with Majestic and Fresh Again, third and fourth respectively.
The Message helped the Elcock stables come out Champion Stable with three wins and one second place finish.
Dubai Dutchess, of the Shariff stable, with Drepaul aboard, took the E class opening 1200M event and the $350,000 first prize and a trophy from the Baliff. Traditional Man, who did most of the front running, was third and Momzelle fourth.
Technology of the P & P Syndicate/Elcock stable and ridden by Findley, won the four year-old Guyana & West Indies Bred horses event over 1500m. Technology won from Damascus Dream capturing $350,000 and the Omai Transportation and Services trophy while the three-year-old Guyana and West Indies Bred 1400M event was won by Feels Like Gold from Come Dance With Me.
Watch My Shadow of the Elcock stable, won $250,000, compliments of Digicel, in the three-year-old race for Guyana Bred horses over 1200M. Third World was second, with Quincy Girl and Blessing, third and fourth respectively.
The G class over 1500M race for $200,000 and the Carl Clean Enterprise trophy, was won by Stormy Lass of the Chico Singh Stable ahead of Face The Music, Work Force and Spanish Love while in the H1 and lower 1500M event, Funny Side of the Gray stable, raced off with $160,000 and the Francis ‘Chico’ Chichester trophy from Royal Salute, and Diplomat.
The Mexican, ridden by Baker of the Budhoo Stable won the J K and L race.
Yap Drepaul with three wins and two second placed finish, edged out Andron Findley with three wins and one second placed finish for the champion Jockey Crown while Colin Elcock, was adjudged the top trainer.
The major sponsors were Delmur Company Limited, Dequan Shipping and Trading, Omai Transportation, Attorney at Law R.N. Poonai, and the RCMTC&SF among others. The principals of the RCMTC& SF would like to thank all the sponsors and fans for making the day what it was.
A whopping $5M in cash, trophies were up for grabs while over 60 horses participated in the day’s action.
The next race date for the club is March 25.
