The economy has grown over the last five years and the growth is not only because of government’s efforts but also the contributions of the private sector, households and individuals, Minister of Finance Dr Ashni Singh said in his feature address at the flag raising ceremony in Region Three last Wednesday.
And Dr Singh also gave the assurance that “government is committed to transform Guyana,” as he addressed the gathering at the regional compound at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, according to a press release from Regional Information Officer Jaidev Dudhnath.
The finance minister posited also that Guyana today is different from 1970 when it became a republic since there is a vibrant democracy and a legislative framework which all Guyanese should cherish, guard and protect.
Among the gathering were Regional Chairman Julius Faerber, Regional Vice Chairman Azzam Mohamed, Regional Executive Officer Donald Gajraj, Member of Parliament Bibi Shadick, other regional officials, residents and teachers and students.
Regional Chairman Faerber in his presentation noted that new developments emerged after February 1970, pointing to new schools, hospitals, and roads as evidence of the achievements.
Faerber also urged residents to work in tandem with the Neighbourhood Democratic Council and the Regional Democratic Council to ensure that a better Guyana is achieved.
The two-hour programme which included national and patriotic songs, dances, dramatic poetry and Tassa drumming culminated with the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead, the release added.
