The body of a missing security guard yesterday washed ashore at Den Amstel, on the West Coast of Demerara.
Walter Hamilton, of Lot 434 ‘B’ Field, Sophia, was found around 4pm yesterday and his body was transported to the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour at Best Village, on the West Coast. There, the dead man’s uncle-in-law, Richard Smith, positively identified him.
According to him, he had been attached to theGuyana National Shipping Corporation (GNSC) for about four months, after he moved from Berbice to seek employment in Georgetown.
Hamilton was last seen by his co-workers around 2am on Sunday on the wharf. Two other guards on duty told GNSC officials that they heard a splash and upon checking Hamilton’s post, they found that he was missing.
When Stabroek News contacted the man’s wife, Abigail Hamilton, she indicated that her husband had lived in the British Virgin Islands for 11 years and only returned to Guyana in September last year. She noted that he started working at GNSC on October 10.
The woman stated that she last saw Hamilton on February 28, when she came to Georgetown to visit. She pointed out that since his move, she frequently visited.
“Tuesday afternoon, he follow me and put me in a car and send me home to Berbice… that was around 6:30 and he went to work for 7 o’clock,” she said.
She noted that police could not ascertain whether there was foul play in the man’s death. However, she explained that she was told he was looking over two yachts, which had pulled into the wharf. Someone aboard one of them heard a splashing sound, she said, and that person had related to family members that after hearing the sound, he looked over and noticed the guard was gone. Hamilton is survived by a son.
