Mark King, who pleaded not guilty to robbery with the use of a dangerous weapon and subsequently caused a raucous in court, was remanded to prison by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
It was alleged that on March 1 on the Agricola Public Road, King used an ice pick to rob Mamal Sukdeo of an Alcatel cell phone, worth $15,000. The court heard that Sukdeo was a passenger in a minibus and on disembarking, he was on a call when the accused snatched the phone and ran into Agricola.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry told King she was remanding him because of the prevalence and seriousness of the crime.
However, the accused became annoyed and when given a chance to speak, said that he had purchased the phone from someone for $1,000. He claimed too that he was smoking a joint (marijuana) immediately prior to his arrest and when he saw the police approaching he ran and disposed of the drug. He said he was later told that he was being arrested over armed robbery. King who claimed that he was terminally ill, then began to create an uproar in court and was removed.
He is to return to court on March 12.
