For the first time in two decades Guyana will host a 20 kilometres race in honour of esteemed Mexican athlete Jose Macias Luna on Sunday at 05:30hrs from Coldingen, East Coast Demerara, to finish in front of the Mexican Embassy on Brickdam.
Macias Luna who is the record holder of the ‘Constancy and Resistance’ record conferred by the Mexican Athletics Federation has run every day since May 01, 1989, accumulating more than 94,000 kilometers around the world.
According to a press release, Macias Luna has already touched the ports of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Ecuador and will now run in Guyana. The event is coordinated by the Embassy of Mexico in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) and all athletes are invited to participate in the history making event.It is anticipated that this initiative will see the rebirth of this very important sport activity in Guyana.
Trophies will be given to the first four male and female finishers in the open categories and the first three male and female finishers in the masters categories. Medals will also be presented to participants finishing the race, the press release noted.
Meanwhile, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony will start the athletes off to commence the event.
A closing ceremony will be held by President of the AAG, Colin Boyce, Ambassador of Mexico Fernando Sandoval and Minister Anthony to present the athletes with their prizes.
However, while up to press time no national athlete has been confirmed to participate in the event, registration can be done at Olympic House in Kingston.
