There was weeping and wailing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday as four men were sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined $100,000 each on a charge of abduction.
Takwin Springer, Colin Mansonhing and Delwin Bourne—the fourth man Jason Rambarran was absent—stood before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and were sentenced.
The particulars of the charge were that on Wednesday, January 26 at Albouystown, Georgetown the defendants abducted Gregory Lyle with the intent to cause him to be secretly confined.
Initially the defendants were represented by attorney George Thomas but yesterday attorney Gordon Gilhuys asked for a non-custodial sentence and for the magistrate to use her discretionary powers, promising that the men would not come before her again.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry said she took into consideration the way in which the crime was committed, noting the way in which the VC was abducted and bound and that the VC was beaten before being taken and the plea by the defendant’s attorney.
On hearing the ruling, the mother of the defendant began crying loudly, causing a commotion, and left the court room asking “Why?” loudly, hitting the stairs as she walked down and witnessed her son being taken away.
