Chumattie told this newspaper that after the altercation, she threatened to report the abuse to the police station and then proceeded to go about her daily chores. Her husband, she said, went downstairs to the bathroom area of the yard. She was later alarmed by his agonizing screams and upon checking, she saw the man in a full blaze.

Neighbours were alerted and managed to douse the man with water. According to relatives, Seebarat was able to communicate with them that he drank the poisonous substance before throwing kerosene on himself and lighting himself afire.

An ambulance was called and the injured man was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and later transferred to the GPH.

The man is survived by one child.
