Herman Ali, called ‘Shark Oil,’ will face a retrial for the murder of Roydel Sandy, after a jury failed to arrive at a unanimous verdict yesterday at the Berbice Assizes.
After deliberating for almost six hours, the jury foreman informed Justice Brassington Reynolds that it was unlikely that further direction would see a unanimous decision. Ali was subsequently remanded for a retrial.
Ali is accused of fatally stabbing Sandy to death at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, in October, 2006. He claimed self defence, saying that after he had an altercation with a woman, Sandy attacked him with the knife. He said the stabbing occurred as they struggled with each other.
